John Adams’
The Gospel According to the Other Mary takes a fresh approach
to the combination of materials that he pioneered so successfully in
El Niño. Commissioned
by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, it will be presented in a concert version May/June 2012,
conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, and will return the following season in a fully staged
edition, directed by Peter Sellars. A tour of the fully staged production will be given in
Los Angeles, London, Paris, Lucerne and New York in March, 2013.
An Impressive Performance
Daniel Bubeck gave an impressive performance in the title role. His voice had an appealing,
mezzo-ish darkness… it filled the hall with a vibrant sound, backed by elegant
phrasing.

A Rare Concert in a Sacred Space
The highlight of the evening was Mr. Bubeck's realization of "Father in Heaven" from Judas Maccabaeus.
Here, this young singer dazzled with purity of tone, and the unique setting within a temple added a level
of poignancy. The crowd felt this, as well, and Mr. Bubeck was deservedly accorded the one curtain call of
the night.
